Klaus Günther’s area of interest are legal philosophy, theory of legal argumentation, concept and theories of responsibility, legal theory of globalization, sociology of Law; law and literature (law as literature) and fundamental problems of criminal law.
He studied philosophy and law in Frankfurt am Main, before becoming a research associate and assistant professor (1983-1996). He taught at the EUI in Florence and at the Universities of Rostock and Zurich and is since 1998 a professor of Legal theory, Criminal Law and Criminal procedure law at the Institute of Criminal Science and Philosophy of Law at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University. He was also a fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin (1995-1996), a visiting professor for Comparative criminal law at the Buffalo Law School (State University of New York, 2000), a visiting fellow at Corpus Christi College Oxford (2001), a visiting professor at the École des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (Maison des Sciences de l’Homme, Paris, 2003), a visiting professor at the London School of Economics, Department of Law (2012) and a visiting professor at SciencesPo Paris, Ecole de droit (2016).
He was a member of the Program Advisory Council of the Werner Reimer Conferences on Innovative Research Questions at the Werner Reimers Foundation in Bad Homburg v. Germany. d. H. (1997-2001), a spokesman of the Program Advisory Council (1999-2001) and is since 1998 a board member of the German section of the International Association for Legal and Social Philosophy (IVR). Since 2001, he is also a member of the Research Council at the Institute for Social Research in Frankfurt am Main and acted as coordinator of the application for the establishment of a cluster of excellence « Formation of Normative Orders » within the Excellence Initiative of the Federal Government and the Länder (2007). He is co-speaker of the Cluster of Excellence 243 « Formation of Normative Orders » and fellow and member of the Board of Directors at the Research College Human Sciences of the Goethe University in Bad Homburg v.d.H since 2007. He was recently appointed member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Frits-Bauer-Institut Frankfurt am Main (2017).
