Lawyers and the defense of the rule of law in a world of algorithms
The digital revolution affects society as a whole and has major implications for the law and the legal profession and the judiciary. The extent of the transformation under way justifies concern for the defence of the rule of law in a world of algorithms and big data.
As a first step, this conference will examine, drawing on real-life examples, the challenges of the current digital revolution to the fundamental guarantees of the rule of law, namely the accessibility and foreseeability of the law, equality before the law and the prohibition of discrimination, as well as the right to a fair trial. It will also highlight the importance of applying certain aspects of these fundamental guarantees to private stakeholders involved in the computerisation of justice and the State. As a second step, the conference will focus on the role that lawyers should play in this context in order to defend the interests of citizens, to oversee ongoing developments and to maintain the independence of Bars and Law Societies in the face of technological change.
